February 24, 2021

Acid is the major component in our stomach that helps in keeping our digestive system healthy. Acid levels in the stomach should always be appropriate. High acid can cause acid reflux diseases, and low acid can obstruct nutrient absorption. The secretion of acid in our stomach is controlled by hormones as well as our nervous system.

Sometimes our stomach produces an excess amount of stomach acid that causes various unfavourable symptoms. Some of the symptoms are heart burning, sore throat, burping, bloating, regurgitation, etc. It is often recommended to rely on home remedies for acidity and gas problems if the disease is mild. In case you are facing acidity issues more than twice a week, you must visit a doctor because you might be suffering from gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD).

What increases the acid level in the stomach?

1. Eat slowly

One needs to eat slowly and follow the process of grazing. It means we should eat small meals frequently instead of eating three heavy meals every day. This will help in absorbing the nutrients and digesting the food properly.

2. Avoid carbonated beverages

Carbonated drinks make you burp frequently and send acid into the esophagus. It is advised to drink flat water in the place of sparkling water. Avoiding carbonated beverages can help a lot in treating acid reflux disease.

3. Don’t sleep just after eating

While standing or sitting the gravity keeps the acid in the appropriate place in your stomach. Make sure that you don't sleep after having a tummy full of food. Try to go to bed three hours later after eating. It means that you avoid taking naps after lunch and say no to midnight snacks.

Though acidity sounds common and curable but, sometimes it becomes very painful and difficult to handle.
