How to get rid of gastric stomach pain fast: Home remedies

October 07, 2022

Stomach aches can be excruciatingly painful. One minute you are totally fine, the next minute you are curled on the couch. Stomach aches can occur whenever there is irritation in the stomach lining. The most commonly used term for this condition is “upset stomach”. An upset stomach can refer to gastrointestinal symptoms like bloating, nausea, gas, indigestion, heartburn, and more. An upset stomach is not a disorder but a bunch of above mentioned symptoms that make you feel uncomfortable. Most of the time, it can be taken care of by implementing some home remedies as a quick fix to the issue at the moment. Home remedies for upset stomachs are widely popular in Indian households. These home remedies work effectively on the symptoms and help with providing quick relief. They are easy to prepare and readily available in every kitchen.

Here are some quick home remedies for upset stomach that will surely ease your pain.

1. Ginger

When it comes to home remedies for upset stomach, ginger tops the list for obvious reasons. Its natural anti-inflammatory properties make it one of the best natural cures for pain. The most common way to have it is in the form of a beverage. Just chop some fresh ginger root and add it in boiling water for 5 mins.

2. Buttermilk

Buttermilk neutralises the excess acid produced in the stomach that would otherwise irritate the stomach lining and cause heartburn and gastric pain. Adding a pinch of cumin powder and rock salt to buttermilk enhances its effectiveness against an upset stomach.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

Unknown to a lot of people, apple cider vinegar is actually a great cure for an upset stomach. It helps in returning the acid levels in the stomach back to normal. Always remember to dilute it before consumption.

4. Cumin

Cumin or Jeera seeds have been used to find relief from gastric issues like gas, bloating, acidity for ages now. You can roast a teaspoon of cumin seeds and have it with some rock salt to relieve the pain. Alternatively, you can grab a sachet of Gas-O-Fast Asli Jeera and just mix it with water for instant relief from pain.

5. Carom seeds

Also known as Ajwain, carom seeds are the go-to solution for indigestion and bloating. Take a tablespoon of ajwain and a pinch of salt with warm water and you will be ‘burping’ your problems away pretty soon.

6. Heating Pad

This one is really easy. Applying a heating pad on your lower abdominal area can relieve stomach cramps and relax the tensed muscles.

7. Peppermint

The presence of menthol in the leaves of peppermint is a natural pain reliever. For this reason, peppermint tea is widely used to relieve stomach cramps caused due to an upset stomach. You can brew the peppermint tea or chew on the leaves directly.

While these were some home remedies for an upset stomach; much of the discomfort can be avoided by simply avoiding certain habits such as:

  • Avoid lying down when you are feeling unwell in the tummy. When the body is horizontal, the acid is more likely to travel backward and upward, leading to a case of heartburn.
  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcohol as it has the potential of triggering gastric issues like acid reflux.
  • Avoid fatty, greasy and overly spicy foods as they increase the risk of indigestion.
