Indigestion is a problem so common that most of us have experienced it at some point in time. Oil and spicy foods are perhaps the biggest culprits, given that Indian food typically contains generous amounts of both. Overeating and eating unhealthy can also be a cause for indigestion. Some common symptoms of indigestion include-

•    Discomfort after a meal
•    Burning sensation in the upper abdomen
•    Bloating and tightness in the abdomen
•    Nausea
Even though indigestion is not a serious ailment, you can face discomfort and it might take a toll on your health. However, a constant occurrence may be the indicator of a more serious issue. Regular indigestion can be cured with some lifestyle changes, usage of common kitchen ingredients and over-the-counter medication. Some simple indigestion remedies can usually cure the problem.
Baking Soda
Indigestion can be caused by stomach acids and baking soda helps in neutralizing their effect. It contains sodium bicarbonate which counteracts the hydrochloric acid released by our stomach. You can take baking soda by mixing one spoon of it with a glass of water.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple Cider Vinegar is one of the oldest indigestion remedies. It contains a mixture of magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and other minerals that aid digestion. It can be consumed without mixing with other items. Or you can mix it with honey or water.
Carrom Seeds (Ajwain)
Ajwain is an age-old remedy for many stomach-related problems like indigestion, acidity, flatulence, and acid flux. Ajwain contains active enzymes which contribute to smooth digestion by facilitating the flow of gastric juices. Ajwain can be consumed whole or in powdered form by mixing with water.
Ginger
Ginger is a popular ingredient found in Indian meals and makes for one of the best indigestion remedies. It contains antioxidants and gingerol, which aid contractions of the gastric muscles. Ginger also cures other effects of indigestion like nausea and inflammation and can be consumed either raw or with water and tea.
Fennel Seeds (Saunf)
Saunf is also an ingredient which is popularly used in Indian cuisine. Saunf has fenchone and estragole which help in the removal of gases from the digestive tracts of our body. It relaxes the stomach muscles and also boosts the production of gastric juices. For consumption, fennel seeds can be taken with water or can be added to tea.
Indian Gooseberry (Amla)
Amla is a fruit found in India, Middle Eastern countries and South Asian countries. Amla combines aphrodisiac, diuretic, laxative, carminative, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. A mixture of antioxidants and coolants helps to clear the acids and gases present in the body and also cools our stomach. Murabba, a dish made from amla, is said to be one of the best indigestion remedies.
Coriander Seeds (Dhaniya)
Coriander seeds or dhaniya seeds are easily found in Indian vegetable markets. Dhaniya contains antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties that cure an upset stomach and indigestion. It also stimulates the body’s digestive process. Coriander also contains an essential oil, which detoxifies the liver and increases one’s appetite. Coriander seeds can be consumed with water.
Lifestyle Changes
Changes brought about in one’s way of living can bring down the instances of indigestion. Reducing the consumption of alcohol and smoking can help a great deal. Ensuring a gap of three to four hours between dinner and bedtime and sitting upright for at least two hours after every meal can also help in preventing indigestion. Antacids also make for one of the best indigestion remedies.
Indigestion can cause ache and distress, sometimes also resulting in nausea, vomiting, and gas. It is thus, recommended to cure it immediately and not let it develop into a serious problem.
