5 tricks to get rid of Gas After Surgery

October 30, 2019

Surgeries in the general have several after effects and one of the most discomforting effects is the gas in stomach. Stomach gas caused due to surgery can cause acidity, stomach gas pain, and stomach bloating. While the doctor will recommend several medicines to get you the relief from stomach ache, the discomfort of gas in stomach is what needs to be dealt with.

Gas-O-Fast has these 5 tricks to get rid of gas after surgery and ensure you have smooth recovery.

Take a short and easy walk:

While you may think, it is better to rest post a surgery, we advise you to take a short, slow walk if you feel the physical energy for it. An easy walk will encourage bowel movement in the body, soften the muscles and help release stomach gas and relive you of constipation, if any. However, this is advisable only if you are physically energetic to take the walk. Gas-O-Fast recommends at least a 10 minute slow and easy walk especially after meals to promote digestion and breakdown of food. However, one should refrain from any strenuous physical activity at least for the first week or two.

Leg raising exercise:

Leg raising exercises are quite simple and often recommended by the doctor to ease the discomfort caused by gas in stomach. One must lie on the back, with a pillow placed under the knee, and then raise one leg towards the stomach with the knee bent; hold the posture for 10 seconds and relax. Repeat the same exercise with the other leg and do 5 rounds of this. The slow, soft movement will contract and expand the abdomen muscles and help the gas in stomach pass through the digestive system. You can try this exercise 2-3 times in a day to get relief from stomach gas after surgery.

Massage or rub your stomach:

To get rid of the discomfort caused by gas in stomach and the stomach ache, you can also massage or rub your stomach with your fists. Use your left fist to push the right side of the stomach with gentle pressure, and then roll up the fists across the abdomen to the left side of the stomach. Remember to put only gentle pressure and only to the extent bearable by the body. The massage will rejuvenate bowel muscles and fasten the digestion process, releasing stomach gas and relieving you of stomach ache, bloating and discomfort.

Apply Heat Pack:

Another very effective trick to get relief from the stomach gas after surgery is to apply a heat pack on your abdomen for 10-15 minutes. Wrap the heat pack in towel and place it on your abdomen, letting the heat ease stomach muscles and ease movement of stomach gas through the body. Do not apply the heat pack for more than 15 minutes at a stretch as it may cause increased swelling after surgery. However, if the pack is providing comfort and there are no complications from the use, you can apply the heat pack 2 times a day with a break of an hour between two applications.

Wear loose, comfortable clothes:

While you might feel this to be a non-effective trick for reliving gas in stomach, Gas-O-Fast advises you to try it at least once. Clothing plays a huge role in the comfort of your stomach. If the clothes are too fitting and put a pressure on the abdomen, the stomach is in discomfort and gas troubles will arise. Thus, it is suggested to wear loose and comfortable clothing especially after your surgery to avoid any pressure on the abdomen muscles, helping the trapped stomach gas to move through the digestive track. Switch to pajamas, non-elastic clothes, jumpers, pullover dresses, and any other comforting attire until at least 1-2 weeks of surgery.

Apart from these tricks, you can try these few suggestions to relieve of the gas in stomach.

Sipping some hot peppermint tea:

Peppermint tea is known as one of the most effectual home remedies for indigestion. Peppermint is enriched with antispasmodic and relaxant properties that promote healthy digestion and no clogging of gas in the stomach. Peppermint very effectively calms the stomach muscles and enhances the flow of bile which helps in digestion of fats. To get instant relief from gas, stomach ache, stomach burning, acidity, and heartburn – you can get Gas-O-Fast Jeera from the nearest chemist shop. Alternatively, you can boil a few peppermint leaves in water for approximately 15-20 minutes, strain the mixture, and drink it hot post all three meals of the day.

Avoid Straws:

Drinking from straws should also be avoided generally and especially post a surgery. Drinking from the straw also makes you swallow a lot of air, leading to painful bubbles in the gut causing stomach gas troubles and stomach ache. Hence, drink through open containers at least until you are no longer suffering from gas troubles.

Avoid Carbonated Drinks:

Carbonated drinks are an unhealthy drink option especially after surgery. Carbonated drinks can make the pain after surgery even worse since they contain carbon dioxide, and could cause stomach gas and bloating.

Eat liquid and soft food:

The best way to stay away from gas troubles after a surgery is to stay on a liquid diet and eat only food until all stomach gas problems are solved. These foods are easier to digest and move flexibly through the digestive tract, easing the process and leading to no formation of gas in stomach. Foods such as broth, soup, juices, milkshakes, puddings, mashed potatoes, etc. should be preferred.

That said, for quick relief you can try Gas-O-Fast sachets and Gas-O-Fast plus tablets that contain digestive enzymes and provide you instant relief from stomach gas and bloating.
