5 Foods that can cause Heartburn

Heartburn is a common health ailment that is typically associated with acid reflux. Acid reflux is medically defined as a condition in which the stomach contents are forced back into the oesophagus. This can eventually initiate a burning sensation in the upper or mid chest areas along with neck and throat regions (in some cases) that may get worse while lying down. This burning sensation is commonly known as heartburn.

According to medical experts, bad eating habits and poor food behaviour are the primary reasons that trigger heartburn. Certain foods can relax the lower oesophageal sphincter (LOS), eventually allowing the food to escape into the oesophagus and cause heartburn.

Here are some of the foods that can potentially cause heartburn:

1. Fatty foods

Fatty foods are widely known to trigger heartburn. According to medical experts, high-fat content foods typically cause heartburn in two ways. Firstly, they can directly relax the oesophageal sphincter, thereby allowing the stomach acid to escape into the oesophagus. Secondly, they can stimulate the release of a hormone known as cholecystokinin (CCK) that can further relax the oesophageal sphincter. Moreover, CCK also allows the food to stay in the stomach for a longer time, eventually causing acid reflux and heartburn.

2. Mint

Mints like peppermint or spearmint are known as cooling herbs that are beneficial in soothing various digestive conditions. However, certain researches assert that these foods can irritate the lining of the oesophagus and reduce the LOS tension which may increase the chances of acid reflux.

3. Onions

Onions, especially when eaten raw not only lead to stinky breath and uncomfortable burps but they can also relax the lower oesophageal sphincter. As per health experts, the latter contains a fermentable fibre known as fructooligosaccharides that can cause belching and eventually trigger heartburn.

4. Chocolates

Chocolates typically contain caffeine and theobromine, two components that are known to relax the lower oesophageal sphincter and trigger acid reflux along with heartburn. For instance, a study revealed that chocolate can significantly increase the symptoms of heartburn within an hour of consumption.

5. Coffee

Though coffee is one of the favourite morning beverages, various studies assert that it can trigger heartburn in some people. While it helps people in perking up, it can potentially affect the lower oesophageal sphincter adversely to increase the risk of acid reflux. 

Fortunately, heartburn can be treated effectively with home remedies for heartburn and acidity.
