4 Drinks that can relieve Acid Reflux

October 05, 2020

Acid reflux is a digestive disorder caused by the weakening or relaxing of the lower esophageal sphincter (LES). LES is defined as a bundle of muscles that are situated at the lower end of the esophagus. While functioning normally, it tends to close down in order to prevent the stomach contents from escaping. However, factors like adverse lifestyle habits, bad eating behaviour, and unhealthy food choices can impede with the functioning of the LES, in turn allowing the stomach acids to flow back into the food pipe, thereby causing acid reflux or acidity.

Acid reflux is generally a minor ailment that can be relieved easily with home remedies for acidity or with natural antacids like Gas-O-Fast Jeera, which is infused with the power of Ayurveda and provides instant relief from acidity. Interestingly, you can also savour some drinks to ease your acid reflux and heartburn problems.

Here are some of the drinks that can relieve acid reflux:

1. Water

Water is the best drink that can relieve a variety of digestive disorders, including acidity and heartburn. Health experts assert that the pH level of water is neutral and it can help in raising the pH levels of an acidic meal. Thus, people should drink plenty of water as it can improve digestion and further reduce the risk of acid reflux.

2. Herbal teas

Herbal teas improve digestion and help in keeping a variety of stomach ailments at bay. For instance, they are helpful in soothing many problems, including acidity, gas, and nausea. You can decide on chamomile, liquorice, or slippery elm tea. However, it is important that you only drink caffeine free herbal teas as caffeine is known to encourage heartburn. Moreover, you should also avoid peppermint and spearmint tea for similar reasons.

3. Low fat and skimmed milk

Full cream milk is difficult to digest. It is loaded with fats and can relax the LES to cause or worsen acid reflux. Thus, you should always prefer low fat and skimmed milk as a part of your daily diet.

4. Plant-based milk

Apart from low fat and skimmed milk, you can also consume plant-based milk like almond milk, soy milk, cashew milk, or coconut milk. Almond milk is alkaline in nature and can neutralize the stomach acid to relieve acidity problems. In fact, it is the best milk alternative for lactose intolerant people.

Moreover, you can also try some fruit juices like carrot juice, Aloe Vera juice, watermelon juice, etc. for relieving acid reflux. However, you should refrain yourself from consuming juices which have citrus fruits as the base.
