How to Reduce Flatulence

October 31, 2018

In medical literature, flatulence is defined as flatus expelled through the anus or the state of being flatulent. Commonly known as passing wind or having gas, flatulence is a term for releasing gas from the digestive system through the anus. This situation arises when gas collects inside the digestive system, which is a natural and normal process.

Generally, there are five symptoms associated with intestinal gas; belly pain, bloating and abdominal distension, excessive flatus volume, excessive flatus smell, and gas incontinence. Belching or burping can also be considered a symptom of flatulence. It is a natural phenomenon that everyone has experienced in life. It becomes a problem when it becomes uncontrollable or starts to interfere with your life. Excessive flatulence could be an underlying symptom of some larger condition.

Causes of Flatulence
here are two main ways that gas collects in your digestive system. The first reason is that people can swallow air while eating or drinking and that causes gas to fill up the digestive tract. The other reason is that during digestion, gases are produced and build up in the digestive tract. This causes flatulence in everyone and is nothing to be ashamed about.

Flatulence is also caused by other reasons or medical conditions. The most common of these are:

  • Food or Drink- Certain foods are known to cause gas build-up in the digestive tract. Foods containing a high carbohydrate content, artificial sweeteners or cereal fibre are known to cause flatulence in many. These include foods like bran, various types of cabbage, pulses and lentils etc.
  • Health Conditions- Some health conditions cause flatulence as a symptom. These include:
    1. Indigestion
    2. Constipation
    3. Lactose Intolerance
    4. Irritable Bowel Syndrome
    5. Gastroenteritis
  • Medication- Certain medication flatulence as a side effect. The chemicals in the medicine react with the digestive juices to cause a build-up of gas. These include certain anti-fungal medicine, laxatives, Ibuprofen etc.

Flatulence Treatment
The question on your mind must be how to reduce flatulence and reclaim your life? The solution is simple and includes:

  • Changes in Diet: You must cut out the foods that cause you flatulence. These are not the same for everyone but certain vegetables like cabbages and onions and some pulses are known to cause gas.
  • Exercise: A daily regimen of work out and a balanced diet can provide you relief from flatulence and other gastric problems.

Avoid smoking as that contributes to a build-up of gas in the stomach. Chewing food more thoroughly and eating in smaller bites can also lessen the amount of air you swallow.

The old adage that prevention might be better than a cure is not always true. Sometimes a treatment is also required. A treatment like Gas-O-Fast, which provides instant relief from stomach gas. It contains natural ingredients like Jeera, Ajwain or Saunf which lessen the gas in your stomach gas. After all, a calm and healthy stomach is important for leading a healthy life.
