June 20, 2019

Indigestion, or Dyspepsia, is the term used to describe a group of symptoms that lead to discomfort in one’s abdomen. There can be numerous causes for it, such as overeating, excessive consumption of fatty or spicy food, etc. The symptoms include pain in the stomach or chest, nausea, belching, bloating, etc. Usually, indigestion isn’t a cause for concern among patients; however, if you experience its symptoms continuously for more than two weeks, you must consult a doctor.

Benefits of Home Remedies for Indigestion

If you experience mild and/or infrequent indigestion, you don’t need to use medication or seek professional help. Instead, there are several home remedies you can and should use to treat your indigestion. These remedies have several benefits that have been described below:

Peppermint Tea: Peppermint tea has an antispasmodic effect on your body, which can help in relieving your indigestion. Generally, you should drink peppermint tea after every meal. Alternatively, you may simply suck on a piece of peppermint after meals. Other than helping with indigestion, peppermint tea also helps in reducing nausea and improving oral hygiene. However, people suffering from indigestion due to acid reflux should avoid it because consuming it could lead to your stomach acid flowing into your esophagus.

•    Ginger: Ginger reduces your stomach acid and thus, helps with indigestion that is caused due to extra acid. You can consume it in many forms such as candy, ginger ale, ginger tea, etc. Other than relieving your indigestion, ginger can also help with nausea, muscle soreness, inflammation, balancing blood sugar levels, etc.

•    Chamomile Tea: Chamomile tea can ease your discomfort by reducing the stomach acid in your gastrointestinal tract. Additionally, it has anti-inflammatory capabilities which significantly reduce your pain. Chamomile also has the benefits of inducing sleep and relaxing anxiety.

•    Apple Cider Vinegar: Apple cider vinegar is great for easing discomfort you experience due to indigestion. At times, indigestion can be caused due to lack of stomach acid.

By consuming apple cider vinegar, you stimulate the production of acid in your body and improve digestion. Apple cider vinegar can also promote weight loss and improve your skin condition.

•    Various Seeds: There are several seeds you can use to treat your indigestion. These include:

o    Fennel: Fennel seeds contain the volatile oil compounds estragole and fenchone. These can either prevent or remove gas in your intestinal tract. They boost the production of gastric juices which aids digestion. Other than this, fennel seeds relax the muscles in your stomach, respiratory system, and intestines.

o    Carom: Also known as ‘ajwain’, carom seeds can be used to treat numerous digestive problems such as acidity, indigestion, etc. Just like fennel seeds, carom seeds can boost your digestive system by promoting the production of gastric juices.

o    Coriander: Coriander seeds have anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties that can reduce the intensity of your indigestion. These seeds help relieve other digestive disorders such as an upset stomach as well. They contain essential oils that boost your appetite and detoxify your liver.

•    Baking Soda: When indigestion is caused due to the production of extra acid in your stomach, you can consume baking soda. This will help neutralize the acid and provide relief. Just add about half a teaspoon of baking soda to warm water and drink the solution. Baking soda also boosts your kidney functions and treats joint problems such as gout.

•    Lemon Water: Lemon water is alkaline in nature, which neutralizes excess stomach acid and enhances digestion. Along with that, it is also a great source of vitamin C.

•    Licorice Root: Licorice roots relax your muscles and calm inflammation in your gastrointestinal tract, both of which can trigger indigestion. It also helps in reducing stress. You can either chew a licorice root or drink a mixture of it with boiling water.

•    Indian Gooseberry: This fruit has diuretic, carminative, antibacterial, antiviral, aphrodisiac, laxative, and anti-inflammatory properties. These can significantly improve your digestive process and cure diseases such as indigestion, acidity, heartburn, etc.

•    Lifestyle Changes: Other than consuming certain food items and beverages, there are lifestyle changes you can employ to reduce your indigestion. You must reduce your consumption of caffeine, chocolate, alcohol, fatty food, and spicy food. Each of these is known to cause indigestion if consumed frequently and in large amounts. Maintaining a high-fiber diet is a great way to manage your digestive health. If you’re suffering from mild indigestion only, try to sleep for at least 7 hours daily. Other changes include not smoking and regularly exercising. By implementing these changes, you can stop your indigestion and improve your life in general.

When suffering from severe indigestion, you must consult a doctor or use over the counter medication. However, mild or infrequent cases of indigestion aren’t a cause for concern; you can even use natural or home remedies to ease your discomfort and reduce your pain. These remedies have several added benefits as well, which can enhance your health and daily life.
