Home Remedies for Stomach Infection

March 25, 2019

Stomach flu initially starts with a fever, frequent chills, and nausea. Slowly it progresses to vomiting and diarrhea which is followed by sharp pain and severe aches. The saddening part is stomach flu has no cure. So, once it begins, it will run its course. Below are some of the home remedies of stomach infection which might help reduce pain after the major symptoms have subsided.

Follow the BRAT diet
BRAT is the abbreviation for Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast. These foods help decrease the number of stools a person passes, eventually decreasing symptoms of diarrhea. Their high starch content helps bind food particles together to make stools firmer. This diet replenishes lost potassium and magnesium lost through diarrhea and vomiting.

Drink plenty of fluids
Fluids are always essential because you lose vital bodily fluids through vomiting, sweating, and diarrhea. Drinking small sips periodically is the best way to avoid loss of fluids, these include:
•    Plenty of clear water
•    Sports drinks to help with electrolyte replacement
•    Ginger and peppermint tea to reduce stomach stress and relieve nausea.

Ice Chips
Sometimes even sipping water becomes a hard task because of the tendency to vomit every now and then. On such cases, sucking on an ice chip or two helps us to stay hydrated.

Bananas
Bananas are high in fibers and protein and easy to digest. Their constituents include the fiber pectin which helps ease diarrhea.

Kefir
Kefir is a fermented milk drink rich in probiotics which helps in restoring and rejuvenating the good bacteria in our abdomen.

Yogurt
Although dairy products are not the wisest choice during a stomach infection since they are hard to digest, the probiotics in yogurt might help to bring your digestive system back on track. Plain, unsweetened yogurt can be a helpful delicacy.

Chips, crackers, and pretzels
Binging on snacks such as crackers are beneficial because of their high sodium content. The salt helps retain water balance so that we don’t get dehydrated. Always drink some water along with it as well.

Heat
Lay down a heating pad or microwaveable heat pack on top of your stomach to curb the effects of stomach cramps and pains.

Acupressure
Acupressure aids in reducing nausea. Sea bands can also be worn on the wrist. They are useful in treating nausea if the acupressure provides relief.

Take plenty of rest
No matter how banal it sounds, rest is a vital factor. Your body needs to rest to fight off the infection generated by stomach flu. Reduce your work activity during the day and get plenty of sleep.

Avoid hard to digest meals
Not being able to properly digest food upsets the stomach. These normally include foods which are:
•    Rich in spices or creamy
•    Deep fried or fatty
•    Salty or preserved for a long time

Cinnamon
The antioxidants in cinnamon help ease digestion. It subsides the danger of damage and irritation in the digestive system. The antioxidants in cinnamon include:
•    Camphor
•    Cinnamaldehyde
•    Eugenol
•    Linalool
It also has other ingredients which help in reducing gas, bloating and belching and cramping, and neutralize stomach acidity to help decrease heartburns and stomach infection.
If you have an upset stomach, add one teaspoon of cinnamon powder or an inch of a cinnamon stick to your meals. You can also cook cinnamon tea. This helps in reducing indigestion if done two or three times daily.

Figs
The contents in figs act as laxatives. They simplify constipation and induce healthy bowel movements. They also have ingredients which tend to ease indigestion.

Cumin
The proactive ingredients of cumin seeds help us by:
•    Decreasing gas
•    Subsiding inflammations in the intestines
•    Preventing indigestion
•    Decreasing production of excess stomach acids
•    Performing as an antimicrobial

Ginger
The chemicals in ginger are called gingerols and shogaols. These help speed up stomach contractions, allowing food particles which cause indigestion to move through the stomach walls quickly. They can also reduce vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea caused by a stomach infection.
You can try adding ginger to your food or drink it as a tea. Certain natural ginger ales are also available in the market to help with indigestion.
Ginger is a well-known natural remedy for an upset stomach.
Mint
Mint is a traditional treatment for indigestion in India, Pakistan, and Iran. It can be consumed both raw and cooked. You can boil mint leaves with cardamom to make tea. Mint leaves can be powdered or juiced and mixed with other beverages and food substances.
Along with acting as a breath sweetener, menthol in mint aids in:
•    Reducing discomfort
