Home Remedies for Acidity

Everybody, at some stage in their life, has suffered from excessive belching, bloating or stomach gas. They might not last for long but cause great discomfort throughout the entirety of the condition. Sharp pains, cramping and, swelling may prevail, all thanks to stomach gas.

While the reason behind stomach gas can be something as benign as swallowing excessive air, more often not, it is a result of fermentation (breaking down) of undigested food by the bacteria present in the large intestine. This undigested food usually consists of starch, fiber, and sugars. Stomach gas can also be attributed to digestive disorders such as lactose or fructose intolerance and constipation. While the issues can be solved by simple alterations to lifestyle, some home remedies for acidity can be administered to cure stomach gas in just a matter of seconds.

You can beat stomach gas without breaking a sweat with the help of any of the home remedies described in the following list.

1.    Ajwain or Carom seeds
Boil some water with ajwain. As the water starts boiling, cover the vessel. Take the vessel off the stove and let it rest. When the solution gets to lukewarm temperature, steaming will stop. Sieve the mixture to get a seedless solution. Consume this lukewarm solution. The magical results are observed due to a compound called Thymol which is present in ajwain. Thymol helps in digestion as it secretes gastric juices.

2.    Heeng or Asafoetida
Consume heeng similar to ajwain - just take half a teaspoon of heeng with lukewarm water. It is detrimental to the growth of bacteria that are responsible for the production of excessive gas.

3.    Buttermilk or yogurt
Simply add buttermilk during or after your meal. Buttermilk and yogurt are natural probiotics that contain “good” bacteria - Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. These “protective” bacteria fight off the harmful bacteria that produce gas and ensure that they do not stick to the inner lining of your stomach. In the case of lactose intolerance, whole fat milk can act as a problematic food. Instead, consume yogurt or buttermilk.

4.    Aloe Vera juice
When it comes to skin, hair and, digestion, Aloe Vera is a wonder plant with excellent medicinal properties. It can act as a gas-relieving agent as well as a painkiller for gas troubles. Furthermore, it acts as a laxative so it can also help against constipation also. Aloe Vera juice is an easy-to-prepare concoction. All you need is Aloe Vera gel and water. Put them in the blender and blend the ingredients. Voila! Your juice is ready to drink.

5.    Papaya
Papaya is not just loaded with antioxidants but also Papain, an enzyme that abets the digestion of proteins and prevents the formation of excessive gas. You can either choose to consume its slices or even make a smoothie with yogurt and chia seeds as other ingredients. In addition to combating gas, papaya cures constipation - another possible cause of stomach gas or flatulence.

6.    Avoid problematic foods
Consumption of certain foods can result in gas. These foods may include fizzy drinks, veggies such as cauliflower, broccoli, whole-grain foods, mushrooms, lentils, beans, peas, onions and/or, food that contain a high amount of fats. Avoid consumption of any one at a time to identify your problematic food.
